Why this combination

Why SS 304L in sheets

Carbon limited to 0.030% for weld-zone corrosion resistanceCommonly dual-certified SS 304/304LSame formability and cryogenic toughness as 304Slightly lower strength than SS 304

Thin sheet welds quickly, but fabricated equipment such as hoppers, ducts and cabinets has long weld seams. SS 304L keeps those seams as corrosion resistant as the parent sheet.

For decorative work where welds are minimal, SS 304 is fine. For anything washed down with chemicals, SS 304L or SS 316L is the safer specification.
