Carbon Steel

Carbon steel is the backbone of pipelines, process piping, pressure vessels and structures. Bright Tubes supplies ASTM A106, A53, API 5L, A333, IS 1239 and IS 3589 pipes, A516 pressure-vessel plate, IS 2062, A36 and EN S275/S355 structural steel, plus A234/A105 fittings and flanges, in IBR and non-IBR supply.

Which carbon steel specification fits your service?

Carbon steel orders are written by specification, not by "grade" alone. The same Grade B means different things in A106, A53 and API 5L. Start from the service, then match pipe, plate, fittings and flanges within one line class.

What decides a carbon steel order

Weldability and carbon equivalent

Carbon equivalent, CE(IIW) = C + Mn/6 + (Cr+Mo+V)/5 + (Ni+Cu)/15, predicts hardening in the weld zone. Around 0.43 is the usual ceiling for welding without preheat. IS 2062 E250 limits CE to 0.42. Ask for CE on the certificate when sections are heavy.

Sour service

For wet H₂S service, NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 limits hardness to 22 HRC, and plate and line pipe are often HIC-tested (NACE TM0284). Order "sour service" explicitly: it changes chemistry, testing and price.

Low-temperature toughness

Ordinary carbon steel turns brittle in the cold. A333 Gr 6 and normalised A516 with Charpy tests are the usual answer down to −46 °C. Below that, specify nickel steels or austenitic stainless steel.

IBR for boilers in India

Pipes and plates for boilers and steam lines in India must be supplied with Indian Boiler Regulations certification. We supply IBR and non-IBR material; state which on the enquiry.

How to order carbon steel from us

  1. Specification and gradeFor example "ASTM A106 Gr B, seamless" or "IS 2062 E350 BR".
  2. Size and scheduleNPS and schedule for pipe; thickness × width × length for plate.
  3. Supplementary testsCharpy, HIC, ultrasonic (A435), hardness or PWHT simulation.
  4. CertificatesEN 10204 3.1 standard; 3.2 or IBR on request.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between A106 and API 5L?

A106 is seamless pipe for high-temperature process service. API 5L is line pipe for pipeline transportation, with PSL levels and sour and offshore annexes.

Can you supply IBR-certified carbon steel pipe?

Yes, when required, with inspection-authority documentation for the consignment.

How many carbon steel grades do you supply?

29 grades and products, in 10 product forms: pipes, plates, sheets, coils, bars, fittings, flanges, angles, channels, beams.

Which standards apply to carbon steel?

Commonly ASTM A516, ASTM A234, ASTM A105, ASTM A350, ASTM A106, ASTM A53, API 5L, ASTM A333.

Do you export worldwide?

Yes: to the GCC, Southeast Asia, Europe, the USA, the UK and beyond, with export packing and documentation.
