What is EN 10025-2 S355?
Quick answer
- Definition
- S355 is European non-alloy structural steel to EN 10025-2 with a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa, supplied in sub-grades JR, J0, J2 and K2 according to impact toughness.
- Family
- Carbon steel
- Key strength
- Minimum yield 355 MPa (≤ 16 mm)
- Main forms
- Plates, Angles, Channels, Beams, Bars
- Typical uses
- Buildings and industrial structures; Bridges and infrastructure; Offshore and marine structures
In EN 10025-2, "S" stands for structural steel and 355 is the minimum yield strength in MPa for thicknesses up to 16 mm. The suffix defines Charpy impact energy and test temperature: JR (27 J at +20 °C), J0 (27 J at 0 °C), J2 (27 J at −20 °C) and K2 (40 J at −20 °C). S355J2 is one of the most specified steels in European and offshore structures.
S355 is supplied as plates, flats, bars and hot-rolled sections (IPE, HEA/HEB, UPN, angles). For UK and EU projects, CE or UKCA marking under the Construction Products Regulation and EN 1090 execution classes may apply to fabricated steelwork.
Key characteristics
- Minimum yield 355 MPa (≤ 16 mm)
- Sub-grades JR, J0, J2, K2
- Plates and hot-rolled sections
- Widely used in EU, UK and offshore structures

How is S355 welded and fabricated?
Readily weldable; heavier sections and higher carbon equivalents need preheat.
Always follow a qualified welding procedure (for example ASME Section IX) and the filler-metal recommendations for S355. Verify incoming material by PMI and check the mill test certificate against the specification.
