What is ASTM A333 Grade 1?
Quick answer
- Standard
- ASTM A333 / ASME SA333
- Minimum yield
- 205 MPa
- Product form
- Pipes
- Typical uses
- LPG, ammonia and refrigeration piping; Cold-climate pipelines and plant piping
ASTM A333 covers seamless and welded pipe for low-temperature service, where ordinary carbon steel could fail by brittle fracture. Grade 1 is Charpy impact tested at −45 °C (−50 °F) and is normalised, or normalised and tempered, to refine the grain for toughness.
Grade 1 is a lower-strength carbon steel grade, now less common than Grade 6.
Key characteristics
- Impact tested at −45 °C (−50 °F)
- Seamless or welded
- Normalised for toughness

How much pressure can A333 Gr 1 pipe take?
Barlow's formula (P = 2·S·t / D) gives a quick indication of pressure capacity. With the ASTM A333 Grade 1 minimum yield of 205 MPa, the table shows the theoretical pressure at 100% of yield, and at a 0.72 design factor (the ASME B31.8 Class 1 factor) for Sch 40 and Sch 80.
