Wear plate and alloys for Australian mining and LNG
In short: Australian mines wear out steel and LNG plants corrode it, so buyers need hardness at one end and alloy at the other. Bright Tubes supplies AR400 to AR600 wear plate, duplex, stainless and Cr-Mo pipe, fittings and flanges from India to Fremantle, Brisbane and the other main ports, with ECTA origin documents for eligible lines.
Mining
Choose hardness for the wear you actually have
Sliding abrasion from ore favours harder plate; heavy impact favours tougher, slightly softer grades. Fabrication matters too: harder plate needs more care to bend and weld.
Use the mill's minimum bend radius for the grade and thickness, and bend across the rolling direction where possible.
Preheat before cutting and welding thicker or harder plate as the mill recommends; requirements rise with hardness, thickness and carbon equivalent.
Weld with low-hydrogen consumables. The weld metal is softer than the plate, so hardfacing is used where the weld itself must resist wear.
Fabrication
Harder plate lasts longer, if the workshop treats it right
Most early failures in wear plate are fabrication problems: cracks from bending too tight, or from welding cold, hard plate without preheat. Tell us how the plate will be formed and we'll match the grade to your workshop as well as to the ore.
Compare grades in the wear plate selection guide.

Australian buyer questions
Answers for Australian buyers
- Is there duty on Indian steel imported into Australia?
Under the India–Australia ECTA, in force since 29 December 2022, Australia committed to eliminate tariffs on all its tariff lines for Indian goods, most immediately.[1][2] Some steel articles were on a phased elimination over five years.[3] Preference applies only to goods meeting the agreement's rules of origin, with the right origin documentation.
- Which wear plate grade should I use for chutes and liners?
AR400 is the common all-rounder for chutes, hoppers and liners; AR500 lasts longer in severe sliding abrasion but is harder to bend and weld. See the wear plate selection guide and AR400 vs AR500.
- Do you supply duplex pipe for Australian LNG and seawater service?
Yes: duplex 2205 and super duplex 2507 pipe, fittings and flanges for LNG, desalination and offshore seawater systems, with impact and PMI testing as specified.
- Which Australian ports do you ship to?
Fremantle and Dampier for Western Australia's mining and LNG, Brisbane and Gladstone for Queensland, and Melbourne and Sydney for the south-east.
- How long is the voyage from India?
Longer than to the Gulf: plan for several weeks door to door, depending on route and transhipment. For maintenance spares, hold safety stock locally and use us for planned replenishment and shutdown lists.
