What is Nickel 201?
Quick answer
- Definition
- Nickel 201 (UNS N02201) is the low-carbon version of commercially pure Nickel 200, suitable for service above about 315 °C without graphitisation embrittlement.
- Family
- Commercially pure nickel (99%+) alloy
- Key strength
- Carbon 0.02% max: no graphitisation
- Main forms
- Pipes, Tubes, Plates, Sheets, Coils, Bars
- Typical uses
- High-temperature caustic evaporators; Chemical process vessels and piping; Spun and formed parts
Limiting carbon to 0.02% stops the intergranular graphite precipitation that embrittles Nickel 200 during long exposure between about 315 and 760 °C. Nickel 201 is also slightly softer, with a lower work-hardening rate, which helps spinning and cold forming.
It's used for caustic evaporators operating at higher temperature, chemical process equipment, electronic parts and some combustion boats and laboratory crucibles.
Key characteristics
- Carbon 0.02% max: no graphitisation
- Usable above about 315 °C
- Softer and more formable than Nickel 200
- Excellent resistance to caustic alkalis

How is Nickel 201 welded and fabricated?
Weldable by TIG, MIG and SMAW with matching or over-alloyed nickel fillers. Keep surfaces clean of sulphur and low-melting contaminants.
Always follow a qualified welding procedure (for example ASME Section IX) and the filler-metal recommendations for Nickel 201. Verify incoming material by PMI and check the mill test certificate against the specification.
Which Nickel 201 products do we supply?
Nickel 201 is available in 8 product forms, from ready stock or mill-sourced to your specification, with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates (3.2 with third-party inspection on request).
