What is SS 254 SMO Stainless Steel?
Quick answer
- Definition
- 254 SMO (UNS S31254) is a 6% molybdenum super-austenitic stainless steel with PREN above 42, used for seawater, bleach plants and other high-chloride environments.
- Family
- Super-austenitic stainless steel
- Key strength
- 6% molybdenum super-austenitic
- Main forms
- Pipes, Tubes, Plates, Sheets, Bars, Fittings
- Typical uses
- Seawater cooling and heat exchangers; Desalination plant components; Offshore firewater and ballast systems
With 20% chromium, 18% nickel, 6–6.5% molybdenum and about 0.2% nitrogen, this "6Mo" grade resists pitting and crevice corrosion in seawater and in chlorinated or brackish water. It's also resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking, and its nitrogen raises its strength above SS 316L.
Applications include seawater cooling systems, desalination, offshore firewater and ballast systems, pulp bleach plants and flue-gas cleaning. "254 SMO" is a trademark of Outokumpu, and generic material is specified as UNS S31254 / EN 1.4547. The client term "SMO 254" refers to the same grade.
Key characteristics
- 6% molybdenum super-austenitic
- PREN about 42–45
- Excellent crevice corrosion resistance in seawater
- Higher strength than SS 316L from nitrogen

How is SS 254 SMO welded and fabricated?
Weldable with over-alloyed nickel-base fillers (for example ERNiCrMo-3 types) to keep weld-metal corrosion resistance.
Always follow a qualified welding procedure (for example ASME Section IX) and the filler-metal recommendations for SS 254 SMO. Verify incoming material by PMI and check the mill test certificate against the specification.
Which SS 254 SMO products do we supply?
SS 254 SMO Stainless Steel is available in 7 product forms, from ready stock or mill-sourced to your specification, with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates (3.2 with third-party inspection on request).
