Stainless and nickel alloys for Germany, by Werkstoffnummer
In short: German buyers order by EN material number, expect AD 2000 or PED-conform certificates, and since 2026 must account for embedded carbon under CBAM. Bright Tubes supplies stainless steel and nickel alloy pipe, bar and plate cross-referenced to ASTM, with certificate type set by the mill's approved scope and emissions data requested from the mill.

1. The mill's W0 / PED certificate and its annex cover your product form, grade and thickness.[1][2]
2. The grade is listed in AD 2000-W2 or has a particular material appraisal (PMA).
3. The certificate type, 3.1 or 3.2, matches the scope for your wall thickness.

Certificates depend on the mill's approved scope
W0 approvals are time-limited, under annual surveillance, and limited to listed products.[3] We share the mill's scope document with the quotation.
Seamless stainless tubes to EN 10216-5 are ordered in test category 1 or 2. TC2 adds non-destructive testing and further checks for more demanding service.
State the test category, the EN 10204 certificate type and any options (for example intergranular corrosion testing) on the order.

The options German orders spell out
German purchase orders are usually precise about EN options, and the certificate has to mirror them. We confirm the mill can supply the stated test category and options before quoting, so nothing is discovered at goods-in inspection.

German buyer questions
Answers for German buyers
- What is the material number for SS 316L?
1.4404 (X2CrNiMo17-12-2) is the usual EN equivalent of SS 316L. Equivalents are close, not identical: chemistry ranges and mechanical properties differ slightly between ASTM and EN, so specify the standard you need, or dual certification.
- What does AD 2000-W0 approval mean for material?
A notified body audits the mill's quality system to PED Annex I section 4.3 and AD 2000-W0, for a defined scope of products and grades.[1][3] Within that scope the mill can issue 3.1 certificates; outside it, or above certain thicknesses, 3.2 is needed. For example, one mill's scope allows 3.1 up to 5.6 mm wall and requires 3.2 above.[1]
- Does CBAM apply to steel pipe imported into Germany?
Yes. Iron and steel products are CBAM goods. The definitive period began on 1 January 2026; importers bringing in 50 tonnes or more of CBAM goods a year must be authorised CBAM declarants and surrender certificates for embedded emissions, with the first annual declaration due by 30 September 2027.[4][5][6]
- Can you provide embedded-emissions data for CBAM?
We request installation-level emissions data from the producing mill for each order and pass on what the mill provides. Where actual data is unavailable, importers may need to use default values, so raise CBAM at enquiry stage.
- Which German ports do you ship to?
Hamburg and Bremerhaven, or Rotterdam and Antwerp with barge or truck to the Rhine–Ruhr chemical belt.
