What is Nickel 200?
Quick answer
- Definition
- Nickel 200 (UNS N02200) is commercially pure (99.0% min) wrought nickel with excellent resistance to caustic alkalis, good mechanical properties, and high thermal and electrical conductivity.
- Family
- Commercially pure nickel (99%+) alloy
- Key strength
- 99.0% min nickel
- Main forms
- Pipes, Tubes, Plates, Sheets, Coils, Bars
- Typical uses
- Caustic soda evaporators and piping; Food processing and synthetic-fibre equipment; Electronic and battery components
Nickel 200 is one of the most corrosion-resistant materials for caustic soda and other alkalis, at all concentrations and temperatures up to the molten state. It also resists neutral and distilled water, dry gases and many organic compounds, and it has a low vapour pressure and high conductivity.
Because of its carbon content (up to 0.15%), Nickel 200 is limited to about 315 °C. Above that, carbon can precipitate as graphite at grain boundaries. For hotter service, the low-carbon Nickel 201 is used.
Key characteristics
- 99.0% min nickel
- Outstanding resistance to caustic soda
- High thermal and electrical conductivity
- Limited to about 315 °C (use Nickel 201 above)

How is Nickel 200 welded and fabricated?
Weldable by TIG, MIG and SMAW with matching or over-alloyed nickel fillers. Keep surfaces clean of sulphur and low-melting contaminants.
Always follow a qualified welding procedure (for example ASME Section IX) and the filler-metal recommendations for Nickel 200. Verify incoming material by PMI and check the mill test certificate against the specification.
Which Nickel 200 products do we supply?
Nickel 200 is available in 8 product forms, from ready stock or mill-sourced to your specification, with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates (3.2 with third-party inspection on request).
