Q: Is 304 plate magnetic?

Annealed 304 is essentially non-magnetic. Cold work and welding can introduce slight magnetism, which is normal and does not reduce corrosion resistance.

In short: SS 304 stainless plate to ASTM A240 is used for tanks, vessels, structural parts and fabricated equipment where corrosion resistance and formability matter more than chloride resistance. Thicknesses run from about 3 mm to 150 mm, cut to size on request.

Plate is where most SS 304 fabrication starts: tank shells, vessel heads, flanges cut from plate, base frames and liners. SS 304 forms, welds and polishes easily, and its strength is predictable across thicknesses.

Hot-rolled plate (No. 1 finish) is standard for thicker gauges. For welded vessels in corrosive service, specify SS 304L or dual SS 304/304L plate so the heat-affected zones do not sensitise.
