SS 316L Stainless Steel Pipes
In short: SS 316L pipe to ASTM A312 TP316L is the most specified stainless pipe for chemical, pharmaceutical, food, marine and offshore utility service: 2–3% molybdenum for chloride resistance and 0.030% max carbon so welds stay sound.

Why this combination
Why SS 316L is the default process pipe
SS 316L combines the two things most process piping needs: molybdenum for pitting resistance in chlorides and acids, and low carbon so hundreds of welds do not sensitise. That combination covers a very wide range of service at moderate cost.
Its limits are clear: warm seawater and strong chlorides pit it, and it is not a creep-range material. Those cases go to duplex, super duplex or SS 316H. See why SS 316L pipe fails in seawater on our blog.

Questions
About SS 316L pipes
Why is SS 316L pipe preferred over SS 316?
Low carbon prevents sensitisation in weld zones, so welded systems resist intergranular corrosion without heat treatment.
Can SS 316L pipe be used offshore?
For utility and instrument service, yes; seawater lines generally need super duplex, 6Mo or CuNi.
