SS 316 Stainless Steel Pipes
In short: SS 316 pipe to ASTM A312 TP316 adds 2–3% molybdenum to the 18-8 base, giving better resistance to chlorides and many chemicals than SS 304. It is used for chemical, marine, pharmaceutical and food piping, usually dual-certified SS 316/316L.

Why this combination
When SS 316 pipe earns its premium over SS 304
Molybdenum is the difference: it raises pitting resistance (PREN about 23–25 against 18–20 for SS 304), which matters wherever chlorides, salt air or chloride-bearing process streams are present.
Plain SS 316 has the higher strength of the pair; SS 316L the lower carbon for welding. Ordering dual SS 316/316L pipe gives both and is the usual stock practice.

Questions
About SS 316 pipes
Is SS 316 pipe suitable for seawater?
Only for short exposure or non-critical use. Warm seawater pits SS 316; super duplex, 6Mo or CuNi are used for seawater systems.
Is SS 316 pipe used at high temperature?
Yes, within code limits. For creep-range service, SS 316H is specified.
