What is the difference between titanium Grade 2 and Grade 5?
Short answer
Grade 2 is commercially pure titanium with the best corrosion resistance and formability, used for heat exchangers, piping and chemical and seawater equipment. Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is an alloy about 2.5 times stronger, used for aerospace, fasteners, shafts and high-performance components where strength-to-weight matters most.

Other grades worth knowing
Grade 7 and Grade 12 add palladium or molybdenum and nickel for hot, reducing chlorides. Grade 23 is a low-interstitial version of Grade 5 with better toughness.

Frequently asked questions
Can Grade 5 be welded?
Yes, with full inert-gas shielding, but it is less weldable than Grade 2 and often used as machined parts.
Which specifications cover titanium?
ASTM B265 (plate), B338 (tube), B861 (pipe) and B348 (bar).
What is the main difference between Titanium Grade 2 and Titanium Grade 5?
Grade 2 is commercially pure titanium with the best corrosion resistance and formability. Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is about 2.5× stronger, for structural and high-performance parts.
When should I choose Titanium Grade 2?
Heat exchangers, piping, chemical and seawater service.
When should I choose Titanium Grade 5?
Aerospace, fasteners, high-strength components.
Can Titanium Grade 2 replace Titanium Grade 5?
Only when the design, code and specification allow it. Strength, corrosion resistance and temperature limits differ, so substitution must be approved by the design authority.
