What is the difference between A106 Grade B and A53 Grade B?

Short answer

A106 Grade B is seamless pipe for high-temperature service, with silicon-killed steel. A53 Grade B is general-purpose pipe, seamless or electric-resistance welded, black or galvanised, for water, air, gas and structural use. Their strength is similar, and pipe is often dual-certified, but each specification's tests must be met.

Which should you choose?

There's no universal "winner": the right choice depends on service conditions, codes and cost. Share your conditions with us for a recommendation.

Choosing by service

Process and steam lines in refineries and power plants are normally A106 B. Utility, sprinkler, compressed-air and structural lines are often A53 B, where welded pipe is acceptable and cheaper. Galvanised pipe is only available under A53.

Reading a triple-certified certificate

A106/A53/API 5L pipe is common in stock. The mill certificate must show the tests each specification requires, for example the hydrostatic or NDE test, before the triple marking is valid.

Frequently asked questions

Is A53 Type E or Type S?

A53 Type S is seamless, Type E is electric-resistance welded and Type F is furnace-butt welded.

Can A53 be used in high-temperature service?

Most process codes favour A106 for elevated temperatures. Check the design code before using A53.

What is the main difference between A106 Gr B and A53 Gr B?

A106 is seamless-only pipe for high-temperature service. A53 is general-purpose pipe, seamless or welded, black or galvanised. They're frequently dual-certified, but they remain separate specifications.

When should I choose A106 Gr B?

High-temperature and process piping.

When should I choose A53 Gr B?

Utility, structural, water, gas and air lines.

Can A106 Gr B replace A53 Gr B?

Only when the design, code and specification allow it. Strength, corrosion resistance and temperature limits differ, so substitution must be approved by the design authority.
